They Came from the Sunti River - Ne tulivat Suntista

The Sunti is a beautiful river in Kokkola, Finland. Here is what it looked like when I came here:

This is a river basically made for film noir, right?

Tämä joki on periaatteessa kuin tehty film noiria varten, vai mitä?

Imagine my surprise when I saw the river being dredged and these came out:

The Sunti was coughing up bikes like a smoker's phlegm. In my mind, several ideas appeared.

Sunti yski polkupyöriä kuin tupakoitsijan limaa. Mielessäni syntyi monenlaisia ideoita.

1. This was some ingenious art installation, perhaps by the previous artist-in-residence at the Drake. 
2. The Finns Party disposing of "foreign" bicycles. 
3. The work of "The Bi-psycho-list" - a hitherto unknown serial killer ridding Kokkola's streets of annoying bicyclists who try to run people over. 

1. Tämä oli nerokas taideinstallaatio, jonka joku aiemmin Draken taiteilijaresidenssissä asunut taitelija teki.
2. Perussuomalaiset hävittävät "vierasmaalaisia" polkupyöriä. 
   
   
   3. "Psykopyörämies" — Tähän asti tuntematon sarjamurhaaja, joka yrittää hävittää ärsyttäviä ihmisten päälle ajavia polkupyöräilijöitä. 

One local told me 54 bikes had been retrieved. This is a yearly event. It turns out the answer to the mystery is much more mundane than an edgy art exhibit or a crazed serial killer.

Eräs paikallinen henkilö kertoi minulle, että Suntista löytyi 54 pyörää. Tämä on vuosittainen tapahtuma. Selvisi myös, että arvoituksen ratkaisu on arkipäiväisempi kuin ärhäkkä taidenäyttely tai hullu sarjamurhaaja.

Apparently, Finns get drunk at the pubs and just take bikes until they don't need them and then dump them in the Sunti.

But that won't stop me from writing about a crazed anti-bike killer...

Ilmeisesti suomalaiset juopuvat pubeissa ja nappaavat polkupyöriä käyttöönsä, kunnes eivät tarvitse niitä enää ja hylkäävät ne Suntiin. 

Mutta sehän ei estä minua kirjoittamasta tarinaa hullusta polkupyöriä vastustavasta murhaajasta…
